At friends for an homage to Nigel Slater

posted Monday, 19 September 2005
At friends (D&L) on Saturday night for an excellent homage to Nigel Slater.
Starting informally with some lovely walnut bread, some wild boar pate (from Epicure, I think) and some fried chorizo, washed down with a lovely fino.
Then onto Slater's delicious fish soup - made with cod, prawns and mussels, made fragrant with saffron and spiked with crumbled dried red chilli. A brisk sauvignon blanc in the glass...
Then (stomachs groaning already) onto an informal tray-bake of neck of lamb with potato, aubergine and tomato with plenty of rosemary - and a nice soft Croze Hermitage to accompany.
Neck of lamb is a great cut, in my opinion. It's not a trendy cut, because it is never the most tender, but it portions off nicely and has a good depth of flavour.

Finally - some time later - onto a delicious summer pudding - sharp with blackberries and currants, stained purple with their juice.

About midnight, D & I sat in the garden, in the full moon, with a Cohiba Siglo 1 and coffee, cold but very, very satisfied.

Been trawling through your rather wonderful blog, mate. Good memories of the Slater tribute, thanks for the generous write-up. Re: neck of lamb, you might have noticed that the supermarket butcher counters won't sell it due to some over-cautious regs on permitted spinal cuts, but your local butcher (should you be able to find one) will always sort you out. So what next for dining events at No. 51? What say you to a homage to Ainsely Harriott? Nah, just joshing. Best, D

Mr B - very good to hear from you. How about a repeat of the Apicus evening? That didn't take much work, did it? ;) Should catch-up soon...
