Shrove Tuesday, AKA Pancake Day

posted Tuesday, 20 February 2007

It has become traditional to eat pancakes (crepes really) on Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday) in this country.  Up and down the land, anxious parents will be watching children tossing fried batter in the air and hoping it will be caught in the pan.  It's all a bit curious really.

I am under strict orders this year that I am not to set fire to the kitchen with my gin flambe pancakes again - though it will inevitably happen.  Here are the pancake toppings I shall be gutsing myself on this evening:

1. Traditional - lemon & sugar
2. Indulgent - nutella
3. Scary - gin flambe, lemon & sugar
4. Half cut and not caring - anything I can find in the drinks cupboard that will go with a good flame.  Drambui?  I wonder if the sloe gin will go up in flames?  Maybe a little pastis?

Lemming and sugar for me!

Or lime and maple syrup.
