This is a great idea! I can see why you're stuck on a few there though...will have a think!

Thanks for coming by, Ginger... I might keep this one going, and put together a list of things rather than just one item... I could even link around the blogosphere I guess to recipes and articles... we'll see!

I like this list. Except for Nigel Slater who puts me to sleep with his soporific voice. Maybe you could replace him with Nyetimber? :-)

I'm not sure the readers of the Observer would be happy to see Nigel Slater replaced with a bottle of Nyetimber... but you never know?

I'm going to update soon with some more things under each letter - but if anyone has any suggestions for the missing letters, please let me know!

An inspiring list and an intriguing puzzle to fill those tricky gaps. How about Zuppa Inglese (Italy's take on that great British invention, trifle) or EliZa Acton (a bit weak, I know, but she deserves a place)? (Thanks too for the link to my Beeton post.)

Can't have udon noodles - gotta be English... so still stuck on a few letters...

Love the list! Everything from Earl Grey tea to India Pale Ale. An indispensable little list which sums up the best of English cuisine perfectly.

Durrr, I just saw your point about Udon noodles!

To try and redeem myself, I have just (cheated) looked through the indexes of a couple of recipe books (Elizabeth David - I thought if anyone would know, she would) and the best I can come up with is unrefined sugar. It's weak isn't it?

What, no Scallops??

I always associate scallops with Scotland - don't know why - are they dived for of English waters too? (Is 'dived' really the past tense of 'dive'? How about 'dove for'?)
